My older brother was more than five years older than me. He graduated from Delhi High School in 1941 and completed two years at NJC of LSU in Monroe in 1943. He played played both offense and defense. He was the most "driven" person that I ever knew. Winning was everything. He also boxed in high school. In 1943, he joined the US Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. After getting his wings and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant, he was deployed to the Mediteranian Theater of operations in Europe where he flew 111 combat missions in a
P-47D fighter bomber. He was assigned to the 86th Fighter-Bomber Group, 527th Fighter -Bomber Squadron. He got out of the USAF in 1949 as a Major, wearing senior pilot wings. He joined me at LSU. I was a Senior and he was a Junior. That was fun. He got his BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1952 and went to work for IT&T Gilfillan Brothers. He installed ground-control radar systems at most of the USAF bases in Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. I was always very proud of Jim. He said that the
P-47D was the best fighter aircraft of World War II. I tend to agree with him.
